Spitaltor

The Spitaltor is essentially a medieval gatehouse from the northern city fortifications with two modern pedestrian passages. In 1628, it was given a façade design in the late Renaissance style. The three coats of arms above the archway and the three small obelisks served to praise and glorify the town of Straubing and the sovereign Maximilian I and his wife Renata of Lorraine. In 1628, Bavaria had become an electorate. The Spitaltor thus became a memorial to a significant event in the middle of the Thirty Years' War.
